How to answer "your price is too high"
When a customer says your price is too high, they're usually still interested. If they weren't, they wouldn't tell you. What they need is a reason to pay more than the cheaper bid, or a way to get closer to their budget without you cutting your price.
Tell Typli the job, your price and what the customer said. You get a reply as an email and a text in your own voice that explains your price, offers real options if you have them, and keeps the door open.
What a good reply does
- Thanks them for being straight, without apologizing for your price.
- Explains what the price covers, in the customer's terms: the waterproofing behind the tile, the permit, the warranty. Lower bids are often lower because they leave these out.
- Offers options, not discounts. Less work, a different material, or doing the job in stages lets the customer choose a lower number without you working for less.
- Never criticizes the other contractor. Explain what yours includes and let the customer compare.
- Ends with an easy next step, like a short call or a visit to walk through it.

Subject: About your bathroom estimate
Hi Tom,
Thanks for telling me straight. I'd rather know than not hear back.
My price covers a waterproofing membrane behind the tile and repairing any soft subfloor we find, and the work comes with my 2-year warranty.
If the budget is the problem, we could keep your existing tub and tile around it. That takes about $2,400 off.
Want to go over it on a quick call this week?
Thanks, Rosa

Hi Tom, thanks for being straight with me. My price includes full waterproofing, subfloor repair and a 2-year warranty. If budget's the issue, keeping your tub takes about $2,400 off. Want to talk it over this week?
Should you lower your price?
Usually not. Cutting your price when someone pushes back teaches customers that your first number wasn't real, and it comes out of your margin, not your costs. Change the job instead: a smaller scope, a different material, or a phased schedule. If you do decide to come down, say what changes so the new price still makes sense.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free?
Yes. You can write replies without an account. A free account saves your work and signs every message with your name and business.
Will it offer a discount for me?
No. It only offers the options you give it. It never invents a discount, a warranty or a promise you didn't make.
What if they got a much cheaper quote?
Tell Typli what your price includes that matters for this job. The reply explains the difference without knocking the other contractor, and leaves the decision with the customer.
