What goes on a price quote

A price quote is a fixed price for a defined job. The customer should be able to read it once and say yes. A good quote has:

  • Your business and the customer. Your name, phone and address, then theirs. Typli fills in yours from your saved details.
  • A quote number and date, and the date the price is good until.
  • What you'll do, in two or three plain sentences.
  • Line items, each with a quantity, a unit and a price, so the customer can see what they're paying for.
  • Tax and the total, plus any deposit.
  • Terms: how to accept, how payment works, and what isn't included.

Describe the job and Typli drafts the quote. You check the prices, change anything, and send a PDF or a link your customer opens on their phone.

Quote or estimate?

A quote is a fixed price. If the customer accepts it, that's what they pay, unless the job changes. Use one for smaller, well-defined jobs where you know exactly what's involved: a water heater swap, a panel upgrade, a fence repair.

An estimate is your best price before the work starts, and it can move if you find something you couldn't see. Use one when there are unknowns, like a roof that may have rotten decking or a bathroom that may have water damage.

Either way, if the job changes after the customer says yes, write a change order before you do the extra work.

How long should a quote be valid?

Thirty days is common. Use less when material prices move fast (lumber, copper, roofing) and more for small jobs where your costs are stable. Put the valid-until date near the top, so an old quote doesn't come back to bind you after prices go up.

Your prices, every time

Save your hourly rate and the prices you use again and again in your details, and every quote uses them exactly. Prices in your description ("$1,850 installed") are used as given. Anything else gets a typical price for you to check, and once you have a price list, those lines are marked.

Frequently asked questions

Is the quote generator free?

Yes. Drafting is free, with no account needed. To download the PDF or send a link, create a free account; free accounts can save 3 documents a month. Paid plans save unlimited documents, add your logo and remove the Typli footer.

Can I turn the quote into an invoice?

Yes. Open the quote in your documents and choose Turn into invoice. It copies the line items and takes off any deposit they paid.
